It’s been a while; we know. We’re sorry and yes, we know we say that an awful lot. We’ve been terribly busy developing stuff for lovely people that keeps the lights on…after all, the show must go on!
Here at 23Squared we haven’t totally forgotten about writing interesting things for you to read. One of the major problems is choosing which bit of tech we want to play with next. We’ve been thinking a bit about service integration – how much is too much? What level of integration is useful?
We started off investigating things like integrating Whatsapp into Gmail so that group chats in Whatsapp would be automatically mirrored by a distribution list in Gmail. Yes, that would save us a lot of time communicating with people. We also believe that it would go some way in breaking down the barriers between communication mediums, communication would be, well, just communication. The focus would be on the message rather than the format in which it is sent or delivered.
The problem is, it’s very tricky to find ways of interacting with the Whatsapp system because, well, it’s quite closed.
This led us on the thinking about what we’d do if technology was no object, what would we design, what would we build if it was just simply a case of figuring out how rather than having to wait for the technology to become available? What could be achieved if there were no boundaries, if everyone worked together and nothing was closed?
We believe in open APIs and open source software, as far as reasonably possible. If you can’t release your source then at least let people interact with your system; they may think it’s great but have an idea about how it could be made greater! Even more likely is that you haven’t thought of it! By closing things off and locking things down creativity is stifled.
We apologise that this post is a bit on the short side…we will make it up to you with the next post by making is super-dooper! And we give you free* ice cream. *Free ice cream not available. In the meantime, take a look at this (https://youtu.be/7zTCgMPZRuo) and begin to believe that it really is just a matter of figuring out how and that if everybody collaborates amazing things can happen.
Goodnight and goodluck.
